Based in part on an Igor Stravinsky ballet piece, “The Firebird,” this work celebrates WNED’s commitment to airing the enduring sounds of classical music.
A mythical symbol of rebirth and eternity, the Firebird, or Phoenix, rising from its flames, generates excitement, inspiration and hope. Appropriately, Stravinsky selected music from “Firebird” for his last recording as a conductor at age 85. Through Russian fairy tales, the ballet draws together the romantic interests in the supernatural.
A popular icon in numerous ages and cultures, the Firebird also represents our capacity for vision, and for collecting information about events unfolding within our constantly changing environment.
